  1. Non-Harmonic Tone Lesson

  2. Non-Harmonic Tone Examples

  3. Non-Chord Tone

  4. Anna's Epic Site

  5. NHT Chart

Step 2

  • Provide a 'mind dump' by writing down everything you can remember off the top of your head. Non harmonic tones are notes that don't fit within a chord, and there are a lot of them, like passing tones, neighboring tones, escape tones, suspensions, retardations, appogiatora, and anticipations, to name a few. These non-harmonic tones are what create tension in a piece, and their resolution is quite genius... each has a method (method to madness, anyone?).

  • Provide the title of a song that has a melody you love and describe what you love about it. Zero to Hero... I love that it's such a fast paced song, and that the vocals are extraordinarily high and omg so good. The melody is catchy, and there aren't too many vocal parts covering the song.

Step 5

  • Take notes using the following resources; Harmonizing a MelodyGuess the Chord. In my notes down there :):)

  • Provide the title of a song that has harmony that you love and describe why you love it. xanny, by billie eilish. Her harmonies are really different. I love her smooth tone, and the fact that she doesn't follow the typical 4 chord pattern.

FINALE

  1. Write an 8 bar melody

  2. Add and label chords to harmonize your melody

  3. Include and label the following non-harmonic tones

  • 2 Passing Tones

  • 2 Neighbor Tones

  • 1 Appoggiatura

  • 1 Escape Tone

  • 1 Anticipation

  • 1 Suspension

4.  Post a screen shot and audio file

5.  Describe how the addition of non-harmonic tones enhances your composition. The non-harmonic tones add a sense of... incompleteness and A LOT of tension, which in turn, gives me a nice ol’ resolution (or several). The non-harmonic tones also gave me a different perspective when composing. I feel like most of my composition is chaotic, and the tempo just adds to the feeling of incompleteness. Non-harmonic tones are just what I feel right now.
